Spring is a glorious time here in Somerset. The days are beautifully stretching out, the Mendip Hills are waking up with vibrant greenery, and there is a wonderful freshness in the air. If you are anything like us, May is the perfect month to lace up your walking boots and head out to explore. Here at Beanacre Barn, we are perfectly placed right on the edge of the village of Binegar, offering a brilliant base for those who love to discover the countryside on foot.
Stepping Out in the Mendip Hills – Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)
Best Walking Trails in the Mendip Hills
The Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a walker’s paradise, offering everything from gentle afternoon strolls to proper day-long hikes. You do not even need to get in the car to start your adventures, as there are lovely rural footpaths branching out from right near our doorstep. However, if you are looking to take in some of the most dramatic landscapes the area has to offer, a short drive to Cheddar Gorge is an absolute must.
The cliff-top walks at the gorge offer spectacular views across the surrounding countryside and down into the rocky valley itself. It is a fantastic spot for wildlife watching during the spring months. Keep your eyes peeled for the feral goats that confidently roam the crags and the soaring Peregrine falcons making the most of the seasonal thermals.
If you prefer a walking route that is a little flatter, the Somerset Levels are also within easy reach. This unique wetland landscape is a haven for birds and nature lovers. Spring brings its own special charm to the Levels, with breeding waders arriving and vibrant wildflowers beginning to line the ancient droves.
Rich History and Spectacular Scenery
Walking in Somerset is not just about the natural landscape; it is deeply intertwined with local myths, legends, and centuries of history. A fantastic day out involves heading over to Glastonbury. The climb up Glastonbury Tor will certainly get your heart pumping, but the panoramic views across the Isle of Avalon from St Michael’s Tower at the summit are worth every single step.
Closer to home, the historic city of Wells is just four miles from the barn. You can enjoy a leisurely walk around the moat of the magnificent Bishop’s Palace, taking in the stunning architecture of Wells Cathedral, before stopping for a well-deserved pot of tea and a slice of cake in one of the independent local cafés.
Returning to Comfort
After a long day of exploring the hills and historic sites, there is nothing quite like coming back to a warm, welcoming space. At Beanacre Barn, we have made sure everything is set up for a relaxing evening. You can kick off your boots on the flagstone floors and freshen up in our spacious shower room, which features a brilliant power shower to wash away the day’s exertions.
If the spring evening carries a bit of a chill, you can easily get the log burner roaring in the sitting room—we always leave an initial basket of logs, kindling, and firelighters ready for you. Alternatively, if the sun is still shining, open the double doors and step out into your private, walled cottage garden. It is reserved exclusively for our guests and is a wonderfully quiet spot to enjoy a glass of wine. Should you fancy a night off from cooking, a short walk along a public footpath will take you straight to our local village pub for some hearty fare and a great pint.
We would absolutely love to welcome you to Beanacre Barn this spring. With our easy parking, on-site EV charging point, and wonderfully comfortable twin beds waiting for you, it is the ideal quiet retreat for an active yet peaceful holiday.
