This was the fourth year of opening our garden to the public for charity as part of the National Gardens Scheme (NGS). Again the colder than usual winter with snow in February followed by a lack of rain in March took its toll causing damage and some loss of a number of 'hardy' plants. Nevertheless we are learning to work with these conditions - more mulching of the vulnerable plants is one lesson learned. Despite these conditions (or perhaps because of them) the roses and the poppies have been outstanding this year!
Opening on the 6th of June was again just too early for the roses, but the poppies gave us a fine show! By the 13th, the second Sunday, the roses were almost there! We will judge it perfectly one of these years! The weather every day has been warm and mostly sunny although on a couple of morning we had our doubts. By the end of July ne over 350 people had been kind enough to visit. Our final Open Day, on 15th of August, proved to be the busiest of all with over 190 visitors. So, with the help of a number of 'by appointment' visits, a total of 631 have visited the garden this year.
Our thanks to all who came. Your donations this year have enabled us to contribute over £1900 to the NGS for distribution to the important charities it supports. Thank You.
